A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage every year. Most people's income rises over time, but their SIP stays the same for years. Stepping up the SIP along with your salary is one of the simplest ways to build a much larger corpus without feeling the pinch today.
How to use the step-up SIP calculator
- Enter the starting monthly investment.
- Enter the yearly step-up, for example 10% if you plan to raise the SIP by 10% every year.
- Enter the expected yearly return and the time period.
- Optional: set inflation to see the final value in today's money.
The calculator compares the result with a flat SIP of the same starting amount, so you can see exactly how much the step-up adds.
How the step-up works
In year 1 you invest the starting amount every month. In year 2 the monthly amount rises by the step-up percentage, and so on. For a ₹10,000 SIP with a 10% step-up:
- Year 1: ₹10,000 a month
- Year 2: ₹11,000 a month
- Year 3: ₹12,100 a month
- Year 10: about ₹23,580 a month
The calculator adds up every monthly instalment and its growth, assuming each is invested at the start of the month.
Example
You start a SIP of ₹10,000 a month, raise it by 10% every year, and stay invested for 15 years at an assumed 12% return.
- Total invested = ₹38,12,698
- Estimated value = ₹86,83,849
- A flat ₹10,000 SIP for the same 15 years would reach only ₹50,45,760
At 6% inflation, ₹86,83,849 in 15 years is worth about ₹36,23,467 in today's money.
Effect of different step-up rates
₹10,000 a month to start, 12% return, 15 years:
| Yearly step-up | Total invested | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (flat SIP) | ₹18,00,000 | ₹50,45,760 |
| 5% | ₹25,89,428 | ₹65,30,752 |
| 10% | ₹38,12,698 | ₹86,83,849 |
| 15% | ₹57,09,649 | ₹1,18,35,225 |
Tips for using a step-up SIP
- Match the step-up to your raises. If your salary grows about 8–10% a year, a 10% step-up usually feels comfortable.
- Most fund houses support it. Look for the "top-up" or "step-up" option when you start the SIP, or raise it manually every year.
- Returns are not guaranteed. Equity fund returns vary from year to year. Try a lower return rate to see a cautious case.
FAQ
What is a step-up SIP?
It is a SIP where the monthly amount increases by a fixed percentage or amount every year. It helps your investments keep pace with your income and with inflation.
Is step-up SIP better than a normal SIP?
For the same starting amount, a step-up SIP builds a much larger corpus because you invest more over time. The right choice depends on whether you can afford the higher amounts in later years.
How much should I step up my SIP every year?
Many investors use 5–10%, roughly in line with their expected salary increase. Use the table above to see the effect of different rates.
Can I set up a step-up SIP with any mutual fund?
Most Indian fund houses and investment apps offer a top-up option. If yours does not, you can increase the SIP amount yourself once a year.
How do I find the SIP needed for a specific goal?
Use the goal SIP calculator. Enter your target amount and time, and it tells you the monthly SIP required. For a flat SIP, use the SIP calculator.
