Your net worth is the value of everything you own minus everything you owe. It is the single best number to track your financial progress. Income tells you what you earn, but net worth tells you what you have actually built.
How to use the net worth calculator
Enter the current value of your assets and the outstanding amount on your loans. Leave any field at 0 if it doesn't apply.
- Assets: bank balance and cash, investments, retirement savings (EPF, PPF, NPS), property, gold, vehicles and anything else of value.
- Liabilities: home loan, car, personal and education loans, and credit card dues.
Net worth formula
Net worth = Total assets − Total liabilities
Debt as % of assets = Total liabilities ÷ Total assets × 100
Example
| Assets | Value |
|---|---|
| Bank balance and cash | ₹2,00,000 |
| Investments | ₹5,00,000 |
| Retirement savings | ₹3,00,000 |
| Property | ₹40,00,000 |
| Gold | ₹2,00,000 |
| Vehicles and other | ₹3,00,000 |
| Total assets | ₹55,00,000 |
With a home loan of ₹25,00,000, other loans of ₹2,00,000 and credit card dues of ₹50,000, total liabilities are ₹27,50,000.
- Net worth = ₹27,50,000
- Debt as % of assets = 50%
Tips for tracking net worth
- Use realistic values. Value property at what it would sell for today, not what you hope for. Vehicles lose value every year.
- Track it once or twice a year. The trend matters more than any single number.
- Grow it from both sides. Investing more and paying off expensive debt both raise your net worth.
FAQ
What is a good net worth?
There is no single right number. It depends on your age, income and responsibilities. What matters is that it grows every year.
Should I include my house?
Yes, at a realistic market value, along with the home loan against it. Some people also track net worth without their home, since they will not sell it to meet expenses.
Can net worth be negative?
Yes. Early in a career, or after a big loan, liabilities can exceed assets. Paying down debt and saving regularly turns it positive over time.
How do I increase my net worth?
Spend less than you earn, invest the difference regularly, and clear high-interest debt first. See the SIP calculator to plan investments.
